Math Tips for Back-to-School Readiness

It’s August now. Reading math tips for skills review probably isn't high on your son’s end-of-summer to do list! But as a responsible parent, and educational partner with the school, his math review should be at the top of YOUR to-do list, in order to ensure your child is warmed-up, and math-ready to go back to school.

Why is Math Review Necessary?
If your child hasn’t been much engaged in math for the past two months, then he needs some review because:

  1. his skills are probably pretty rusty, and
  2. he’s fallen out of practice of mathematical thinking.

Once school starts, his teacher will probably provide some review time, but you want to be sure your child is “with the program” every step of the way.

Use these back to school math tips to help your child be more successful in the new school year!

What you want to avoid is your child is still struggling with last year’s math skills and concepts... especially when the rest of the class has moved on to new material.

Review or Preview?
That is the question!

You’re convinced now that you want to sweet-talk or bribe your child into picking up a pencil and doing some math… but what should you have her do?

Should she review material from the year before , or try to get ahead on what will come up in the Fall?

Most students, and I think most parents, will pick the latter: getting ahead sounds exciting and seems to be proactive.

But your child’s best time investment is actually in review. Well planned and structured review now can help put your child in a position to learn more effectively and efficiently all year.
