A message to parents about math education
As a father of five children (from preschool to college age), I am well aware of how challenging it can be to stay on top of all the assignments, school books, and all the other school-related "stuff" your children need.
After 16 years as a math educator, I have realized that you, the parent -- and committed educational partner -- need to understand the prerequisite skills and key topics for your child's math courses.
I am also...
- ...convinced of the value of a strong mathematics background,
- ...concerned that the trends of the last generation in American math education are generally misdirected,
- ...and alarmed that as a nation we are slipping further and further behind in this area!
I am trying to make a difference in math education through my own teaching (at a religious and college prep high school in suburban Washington, DC), through teacher training, and through the materials and information I provide on this website.
My own educational background in Classics at Princeton (A.B. 1983) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (M.A. 1986) has led me to appreciate math's role in education in the broadest sense, as mental training and preparation for other academic work.
In fact, after years of teaching Classics, I got a degree in mathematics (M.A. 1994 Sam Houston State University) and switched to teaching math.
Every child does not need or want to get a math degree, but every child deserves a Sensible Math Education.
