7th Grade Math Problems: Help your seventh grade math student know what to expect in his math class

FREE 7th grade math worksheets at end of page

Is your seventh grade student unsure of what exactly he’ll encounter with 7th grade math problems? That’s a very realistic concern.

Understanding exactly topics are included in seventh grade math can certainly be confusing! His or her class might have a name like Math 7 or Prealgebra, which doesn’t indicate what the content is.

Let’s look at what your child will be working on, and then talk about what to do now to prepare him or her for success.

The Middle School Math sequence comprises a range of somewhat loosely connected topics that could be categorized under three headings.

The Middle School Math years, the years preceding Algebra I, which might be grades 6-7 or 6-8 or 7-8, contain topics under three main categories:

  • Advanced Arithmetic

  • Middle School Math

  • Introductory Algebra

So what kinds of 7th grade math problems might your student encounter?

Advanced Arithmetic is the culmination of elementary school math. The student should come in to this a master of the four operations with whole numbers (see our free math worksheets below), and by the end of it should be accomplished in operations and applications of fractions (adding fractions, subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions & dividing fractions), decimals and mixed numbers.

In fact, one of the most important 7th grade math skill is calculating percentages. Check out our simple-to-use, instructional Percents e-book that will Skyrocket Your Child's Math Skills!

In fact, percents are so critical that when a student gains expertise in calculating percentages while in middle school, he'll be able to breeze through all the percents problems he'll encounter in high school math and science courses.

All these topics are important in their own right, and they also lay the mental groundwork for algebra.

Middle School Math topics that are typically studied are basic geometry (terminology and formulas), ratio and proportion, percents, the meaning and rules for working with positive and negative numbers, and some data analysis. The very important topic of order of operations could be put in this category.

Introductory Algebra topics are the concept of a variable, using the language of algebra, linear equations, and basic math word problems.

What can your child do now to be well prepared for seventh grade math?
The simple truth is that 7th grade math problems are not difficult, if they're taught and approached the right way. Your child needs to understand how each topic works as she proceeds in class, and she needs to practice her new skills enough to gain automaticity with each skill before moving on to more advanced topics.
